Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

Forro In The Dark (NYC)
Brazilian forro / world / country

Made up of four Brazilians who relocated to New York, this group makes music equally steeped in both cultures. 'Forró’, literally ‘party’ in Portuguese, is a traditional Brazilian music integral to any community; it’s performed in bars and on the streets, it permeates national radio and even provides soundtracks for many soap operas. Its rhythms and scales are undeniably infectious, being designed to galvanize and move people. Traditionally, its lyrics are often pointed and political, which remains true in the case of Forro In The Dark. By swapping the more traditional accordion and triangle for flutes and electric guitar, this four piece offer up a sort of revisionist take on this timeless Brazilian sound. With bilingual lyrics and rollicking drums, Forro In The Dark incite a party with a purpose.

Personnel: Mauro Refosco (zabumba drum and vocals), Davi Vieira (percussion and vocals), Guilherme Monteiro (guitar and vocals), Jorge Continentino (pifano flute, sax and vocals) and Jose Grey (bass)

DJ Waahli (MTL)
samba-reggae / Brazilian / funk

DJ Waahli is a purveyor of groove. He is a member of Nomadic Massive, Montreal’s leading global hip-hop reggae group and, along with fellow beat junkie DJ Kyou, he holds down one the city’s longest running hip-hop/funk/afrobeat nights at Korova. For his performance at the festival he will be dropping some killer Brazilian grooves and some obligatory hip-hop jams. ALSO, stop by the library Friday after- noon to catch Waahli rocking the books.

Zumbini Circus (HFX)

Halifax’s own Zumbini Circus describes them- selves as an “eclectic sonic ferris wheel” and “North End Carnies spreading Carnavalism.” Let by beat man Chris Cookson, get ready for an audio experience that just might blow your mind. Zumbini Circus invites their audience members into a world of exciting music making and entertaining stage antics. Their unique instrumen- tation including accordion, a wide assortment of percussion and a large array of string instruments is always evolving and incorporating new players with exciting and innovative performance practices.

Personnel: Christopher Cookson (percussion), Lukas Pearse (bass), Kiersten Holden (percussion), Zak Miller (guitar), Carlos Pessoa (percussion), Ryan Veltmeyer (trombone), Erin Costelo (keys)...and more!
